We all do many things. But the meaningful work we do is best told as stories. Here are some.
Two incidents which stands out as memorable in my career .
The first incident was when one of the exporters where we had a running order of around 60,000 pieces went bankrupt due to his unplanned diversification of business and did not know how to take it up with an important European retailer client of ours. I took the courage to call him directly and discuss the situation transparently which got him very nervous initially.
But, I got hold of a new vendor with the promise that if he helped me here, he will be on boarded with this business for years to come and i personally shifted all the fabrics, trims, patterns etc to this new vendor and shipped the goods on time. In the end the client mentioned that the only change he had done was the name change of vendor on the LC and did not realise that the shipments had been effected without any delays to the client.
This was the trust the client had on us with which we safeguarded their business during that dire situation.
Second incident was when we had 6 vendors producing goods for a particular denim client when the client announced bankruptcy which disrupted the entire supply chain and resulted in a total chaos on their finances.
Once again, we took it on us to ensure that the vendor gets paid and persuaded them to complete production and be ready to ship goods when the new buyer takes over the company which eventually happened. Though it took 6 months, all their monies got paid without any dues.
This was the TRUST the vendors had on us to protect their interest.
It was the quota period and goods were to be shipped before 31st December come what may. Needless to say, it was a mad rush to somehow get the goods shipped where the lorries and containers were waiting in Queue to move the cargo which was half ready or not ready at all.
During the final control in one such factory, we noticed that the same pieces were being repeatedly shown again and again. So we marked the wash care label on the inside to see if we can catch the same product as was proposed and sure enough it was.
Subsequently when we checked the packed cartons, only the top layer had the right goods and bottom was filled with alternate goods.
This incident proved clearly that quality is not just a process but a daily affair with QA team present to ensure consistency of product quality delivered.
There was this quirky incident when a tall external auditor who came for a factory audit noticed that there were 2 hooks placed at different heights to fix the fire extinguishers at the factory floor. He enquired why there was a need to have 2 hooks and the factory was initially reluctant to disclose why.
Later on our insistence the manager opened up that they were unsure of the height of the auditors coming in. Last time the external auditor who came was small built and insisted to place the fire extinguisher at a lower level to make it
easier for factory employees to access so the need for a hook at lower level and subsequently another auditor who was a bit tall wanted it to be moved up as it might hurt the people.
This proved to me that any amount of certification and once in a year audits may not serve its purpose unless there is constant monitoring of the compliance requisites on a daily basis will help.
